Monster Island Review

Monster Island is an iPhone game developed by released by Miniclip. Players of Angry Birds will find this iPhone app similar enough to be familiar yet unique enough to stand on its own. With 200 levels taking place on three different islands, the application promises to provide hours of entertainment.
The concept is one we’ve seen before. The player controls the main character, or monster, who remains stationery, shooting various rocks, boulders and exploding orbs at the enemy (what appear to be other monsters). People who enjoy this type of somewhat simple game play will no doubt enjoy Monster Island. What may set the app apart from its competitors is control of the shot.
Monster Island iPhone game
With your thumb, you aim an arrow in the direction you’d like to shoot your rock. Drawing your thumb to the right of the screen increases your power meter and the strength with which your shot is thrown. Once you’ve aimed your arrow and decided on the power level, you tap your ‘mini’ in the bottom left corner to release your throw. The controls take a minute or two to get used to but by level four you’ll have it down pat.
The audio soundtrack on the app may be its drawback. The audio is on a loop and quickly gets mundane. The developers may want to consider adding better background music and additional sound effects to the app. For now, I’ll play Monster Island with the soundtrack muted and the sound effects on. Graphically, things are simple but interesting. Rich hues of blue, green and yellow highlight the app with more subtle variations of browns and purples.
Monster Island
For $0.99, the Monster Island app is a good value. The player is taken through tutorials each time a new feature is introduced in a level so that you are never left scratching your head. As you beat an enemy, you win coins which can be used to buy new monsters to control. Players can also purchase coins for real money if they don’t want to wait. Annoying background music and a lack of sound effects shouldn’t deter anyone from purchasing this app for their iPod Touch, iPad or iPhone. If you’re looking for a simple way to pass your lunch hour or entertain yourself while waiting for the doctor, Monster Island certainly delivers.
Perfect for children and adults of all ages, Monster Island is a great iOS game at a great price.

Heyku Review

The Heyku iPhone and iPod Touch app is a fun, fresh way to create and share poetry, witty thoughts, and observations. You are free of the strict parameters of a traditional haiku–17 syllables in three lines–and, instead, you create a heyku in three lines with up to five words in each line. Great interface, compelling graphics, excellent privacy tools, and an exciting guided writing feature make this a cool take on social networking or–with strict privacy parameters–an electronic diary.
heyku iphone app review
The Heyku iPhone app opens with an awesome introduction. The cool video vignette adds depth, dimension, and excitement, as you are introduced to the features. You can create an account with email or sign-in with Facebook. A Facebook authorization allows access to your public profile, friend list, email address, and custom friends list. You can authorize it to post on your behalf or not, as well as set the default audience for authorized sharing. For every heyku you create, you can decide to share or not to share with the Heyku iPhone app social network, Twitter, Facebook, and/or Instagram. If you elect not to share, then you can keep your heykus private.
The Heyku iPhone app has fantastic, intuitive interface. Your profile photo is in the upper left corner and notifications are in the upper right hand corner. When you touch your profile photo, you go straight to your personal profile. It is similar to Pinterest, as it contains a tally of your heykus, followers, and following. A feed of your heykus is just below and can be explored with vertical swipes. Just below your profile photo and notifications icon, you will find a small menu bar to move between your profile, home, and explore feeds with a swipe. The easy navigation is a nice touch. The home feed has the heyku in a larger font, and it is framed by the creator’s profile photo, likes, and comments. The heykus range from heartbreak to sandwiches, so virtually any mood can be expressed.
heyku iphone app review
In the middle at the top of the screen, you will find the icon to compose your heyku. With a touch, the keyboard slides up on the screen from the bottom, and your not-entirely-blank page remains in the top part of the screen. The guided mode asks probing, yet simple questions like where are you, how was your lunch, one positive thing that happened today, and many more. You can enter up to five words, and a new question or cue will appear. If you are uninspired by the prompts, then you can press the refresh icon for a new one. You can touch the free text icon in the upper portion of the keyboard to write without questions and prompts. The prompts are simply removed, but a reminder of words allowed remains.
The graphics of the Heyku iPhone app are striking. The origami swan logo is elegant, yet whimsical. The comment icon is reminiscent of a PacMan–adding another quirky touch. The explore feed has thumbnails of heykus strewn across an editor’s desk.

9mm review

Since the inception of video games, one of the most popular styles of gameplay has been the classic first person or third person shooter. Unfortunately, this is a genre that is difficult to play on iOS devices such as the iPad or iPod touch , and many shooters have failed to live up to expectations. One third person shooter on the iPhone that has risen to the challenge, however, is 9mm from Gameloft. It is important to note this game (9mm) contains a ton of profanity, sexual content, drug and alcohol references and intense violence, which means you need to be at least 17 to download this app.
9mm iPhone and iPad game review
The plot behind 9mm revolves around the character John “Loose” Kannon, the leader of a special unit of cops whose purpose is to eliminate the most wanted criminals through any means necessary. The story begins when John’s team kills the brother of a drug lord and confiscates millions of dollars in illegal drug money. Infuriated by the death of his brother and the loss of millions, the drug lord arranges to have every member of John’s team murdered, and only John can save his team by killing the drug lord first. The plot is extremely captivating and acts as an incredibly favorable aspect of the application.
9mm iPhone and iPad game review
In many ways, the iPhone app is very similar to the Grand Theft Auto series, and those who enjoyed Grand Theft Auto will assuredly love 9mm. For one thing, the plots are similar, as John Kannon is equally as violent and needlessly homicidal as the characters from Grand Theft Auto. Additionally, the game mechanics are essentially the same. The one noteworthy difference between Grand Theft Auto and 9mm, however, is that Grand Theft Auto is a sandbox game in which the missions can be completed in any sequence, whereas 9mm is very linear and the missions can only be performed in a predetermined order.
9mm iPhone app review
One major drawback that may make 9mm unappealing to some people is the violence and profanity. Like the Grand Theft Auto games, 9mm involves brutally murdering numerous people, an excessive use of vulgar language, drug references, and many adult scenes such as a level that takes place in a strip club. In general, most players are mature and have grown acclimated to the presence of violence and profanity in video games, and thus will not be bothered by this aspect of the app. For those gamers who are very sensitive and become offended easily, however, the content of this app could potentially be perceived as repulsive and should be avoided.
Despite the mature content, 9mm is a phenomenal app that surpasses nearly all other games in the genre. For those who are seeking a high-quality third person shooter, look no further than 9mm.

The Simpsons: Tapped Out review

The Simpsons: Tapped out is a new Simpsons city building game by EA Games for iPhone, iPad, and iTouch. The game starts with Homer at the nuclear power plant, too occupied playing a city building game on his myPad to realize that the reactor is melting down. The result is a massive explosion which destroys the entire city. It is now up to you, Homer, and the numerous Simpsons cast you unlock on the way to rebuild Springfield.
Each character and building has specific tasks that can be completed for experience and money. As you unlock more characters they will walk the streets of Springfield, waiting to do your bidding. As you level up you buy more land and build new structures. Players needn’t fret too much about original building placement, as all units can be moved and adjusted at will. Performing various activities gains experience, money, and the occasional donut. Donuts are the game’s powerup, they can be used to quickly complete tasks and purchase special buildings and objects. Players can use real money to buy in-game money or donuts to help speed along their Springfield’s development. Your city is rated in a range of different categories, and the higher the rating the more bonuses you gain. Decorations like trees and fences are available to add flair to your town, also giving small bonuses to your rate of growth.
The Simpsons: Tapped Out
There are no shortages of Simpsons quotes and references, and the character dialogues are written in a consistent manner to the personalities of the show. Many of the greatest moments and episodes make appearances in the game. Favorite characters are unlocked as you progress, and users can construct a range of buildings from Springfield staples like Moe’s Tavern to more obscure structures like Hank Scorpio’s Volcano Lair.
Early on, Professor Frink jumps in to quickly fill you in on the existence of parallel dimensions of the Simpsons universe which can be visited. In other words: you can drop in on your friends’ games. This clever feature of the game brings further opportunities for debauchery, points, and experience, not only can you berate or admire your friends’ Springfields, but you can actually vandalize their property and gain bonus experience. There are also seasonal events like Halloween Trick-or-treating and zombie infestations.
The Simpsons: Tapped Out
By far the biggest complaint is needing to reload the game whenever absolutely anything happens on your phone, with the load time being a bit on the long side. This is particularly frustrating during an update as the update will then restart from the beginning. Device autolocks? Update restarts. Low battery warning? Update restarts. Receive a call? update restarts. Other than this annoyance The Simpsons: Tapped Out really is fantastic, especially for a free game. It does not just pander to fans, it is a well designed game with depth and great features. Any Simpsons fan is guaranteed to enjoy the game, and even someone who has somehow never seen an episode would have a great time rebuilding Springfield.

Battle Bears Royale review

Battle Bears Royale from SkyVu Pictures is a multiplayer first person shooter for the iPod touch,iPhone, and iPad. An interesting take on the first person shooter perspective, Battle Bears Royale actually throws you into a war-ridden field with a bunch of teddy bears that you’ve got to take out with your team of other iPhone users.
The multiplayer aspect of the Battle Bears Royale app is actually really awesome. I can honestly say that I was very pleasantly surprised with how smooth the entire thing ran, and how fun it actually was. There’s tons of power ups for you to pick up in the field and plenty of places for you to run around and hide. On top of that, there’s a great group dynamic that comes along with fighting off a team of enemies back to back with some close allies.
Battle Bears Royale iPhone and iPad game review
On top of the normal multiplayer battle mode you can also play a game of capture the flag, which is a great source of fun, especially if you’re looking for something a bit more challenging. Each game, however, will cost you a bit of fuel, which refills every two hours or so.
As you play more and more you begin to gain levels and earn points which ultimately allow you to buy different kinds of weapons to use in battle. This is definitely one of my favorite parts, as you can really get creative while deciding exactly how you want to approach these war-like situations.
I did find the controls to be a bit difficult, especially when it came to aiming. The camera just moves a bit too fast which makes it very hard to actually zero in on a target and gun it down. And with first person shooters, that tends to be a very important part of the process. I wish that the combat system, along with the general placement of the buttons, had been worked on a bit more before it was put up but it’s not horrible.
The graphics are pretty cute, albeit a bit on the low quality side. They weren’t distractingly bad but they weren’t really anything to marvel at either. They were just alright.
Battle Bears Royale
The gameplay audio is pretty interesting for me, as I usually hate playing games with the sound on. However, I actually enjoyed the entire experience more with the sound on while playing Battle Bears Royale. There’s something about the sound effects which just serves to make the entire thing much more unique.
Overall, I’d say that this application is pretty top notch. My only real problem, which I stated earlier in the review, is the control system. If they release an update that fixes that minor problem, it will be absolutely perfect.

Moment Catcher review

Moment Catcher is a universal app download for your iPhone, iPad or iPod touch that allows you to capture reactions to your photos, videos, and favorite YouTube clips on your iPhone and iPad. If you are looking to be the next YouTube superstar or win America’s Funniest Home video, then this is a $0.99 download from the iTunes store not to be missed.
Moment Catcher requires activation of location services on your iPhone and iPad app to function. To get started, you view your photos, your videos, and your YouTube videos with a touch on the appropriate choice in the app. When the video starts or the photo slideshow begins, the Moment Catcher app starts filming through the iPhone and iPad’s camera. As soon as you stop watching the video or photo stream, then the filming automatically ceases. The Moment Catcher app’s video is then saved in your iPhone or iPad’s camera roll. You can view your video reactions within the Moment Catcher app or by scrolling through your camera roll to find it.
Moment Catcher iPhone app review
The moments caught by Moment Catcher have sound and video of your child’s reaction to your videos, YouTube videos, and photos. The interface of the app is quick, simple, and easy. Graphically, it is modern, fresh, and tasteful.
Moment Catcher’s developers, Grolux 2 Productions, want particularly for parents to be able to film the reactions of their children to videos and photos. To preserve the spontaneity of your kids and family, the app was designed to film without obtrusive flashing lights or other effects that would turn a natural, unscripted reaction into a show–or in the case of one of my sons, a hand over the screen as he marches out of the room. For younger kids, you will be successful. You’ll be the responsible adult making all of the touches on the screen and preparations. Once you have an older tech-savvy child, they may catch on to what you’re doing.
Moment Catcher iPhone app review
As with any iPhone and iPad apps that use location services, you’ll want to be mindful of data usage and battery drain. In my experience with Moment Catcher, I simply turned it on and off in the Settings menu. I was able to take advantage of the great, useful functionality, but preserve my battery.
Moment Catcher is a well-designed app for iPhone and iPad in that it has a specific, sought-after purpose tied together in an aesthetically-pleasing and highly-functional box on your devices’ screens. Look for Moment Catcher produced clips to fill your Facebook news feed.

Fliptape review

Fliptape is a promising, free iPhone app for Spotify Premium subscribers to experience music. You will quickly be playing music as a result of the simple navigation, but a couple of wonky gestures and the absence of curated artists make it feel less polished.
The Fliptape iPhone app has a straightforward authorization process, but it misses a key step with required information. You must log-in through your Facebook or Spotify account. Next, you create a profile similar to Twitter. The required information for a profile includes a username, password, and email. The optional information includes your name, website, slogan, and a profile photo. The profile photo should absolutely be required. Many users are not signing up with a photo, so your feed could be a matrix of just black thumbnails with a random photo here and there. For a social iOS app, some sort of visual engagement helps. The bright, nice graphics of the Fliptape iPhone app become depressing when presented with a bunch of black squares.
fliptape iphone app review
The Fliptape iPhone app does include a nice introduction by a fun robot. You use horizontal swipes to move through the introduction. It includes concise information regarding gestures and tools.
The home screen has a nice layout with easily understood icons, but the feed of black squares of fellow Fliptape iPhone app users grabs your attention. At the top left corner of the screen, there is a search icon. The search icon would be great, if it worked properly. I turned my iPhone on and off, exited in and out of the iPhone app, and sent up smoke signals, but I couldn’t get a keyboard to pop up to enter any search for an artist or friends. The headphones icon in the upper left hand corner does, however, function well. It is your back button to move from the music play screen to the home and profile screens, as the music will play in the background. You can touch a photo, if you have one in your feed, or a black thumbnail to start music or go to a profile. If a playlist is linked to the photo, then it will start playing. If you touch a photo to go to a profile, then you will find a list of a user’s music.
The music screen is visually striking, and it incorporates nice features. You can play a song on repeat, favorite, and shuffle. You can also rewind, pause, and fast forward. All of these features are accessed with one touch on the appropriate icon. The problem I encountered was the unpredictability of the play. I listened to one song from one user. When the song ended, I had to find another song and press play. I listened to one song from another user, and then the next song automatically played. Fortunately, the playlists I listened to worked perfectly, and I really liked the quality of the audio.
fliptape iphone app review
From the bottom of the screen, you can access your Spotify account and profile. When you touch the music icon, a list of your existing playlists and access to search Spotify. Unfortunately, a keyboard did not pop-up to allow me to search. Your profile is reminiscent of a Pinterest profile with your photo, name, likes, followers, following, and thumbnails of music shared in Fliptape. A nice touch is the settings icon nestled just above the matrix of thumbnails to streamline the interface.
The intention of the Fliptape iPhone app is very cool and fun, but it just needs some finessing. If there is a way to incorporate more curated playlists or ask you to select some music preferences to generate links to more great playlists, that would improve the social experience. Make people add a photo to eliminate the sad, black boxes. But, perhaps most importantly, if the point of a social music iOS app is to help you discover music, then, at a minimum, fix the search bar interface problem.
